How this pet arrived: Dolores was brought in by a good Samaritan.
Why this pet is the one for you: The care of painted turtles is similar to that of a pet fish in that they need a tank almost entirely filled with water but unlike a fish, they also need somewhere to dry dock. In the wild, painted turtles warm up by climbing out of the water to bask on a sunny rock or log. Indoors, you will need a halogen heat lamp, basking platform, and possibly a water heater to meet these needs. If you are housing your turtle in an outdoor pond, artificial heating should not be necessary. Young painted turtles feed on aquatic insects, crustaceans, tadpoles, fish, and snails. An adult turtle's diet may also consist of carrion and plants including: cattail seeds, cattail stems, and algae. Adult painted turtles have few predators but skunks, raccoons, and foxes may eat the eggs from nests. Please drop by our Escondido campus today to meet Dolores!
