Meet Larry! This friendly little rat is looking for his new home. Rats are extremely social, and although they love their humans and form very strong bonds with them, they thrive with other rats! These babies will need a cage with at least 2 square feet of space per rat. They love to climb and explore, so this cage should be multi-leveled, and contain many ladders, hammocks, toys, things to chew on, things to pick up and pull apart, comfy beds, houses, bedding, and scraps of paper for the rats to build nests with. Rats can also be litter box trained! Rats eat pre-made rat pellets or blocks, seed mixtures (but make sure the seeds or nuts you offer are not to fatty), and fresh fruits/veggies! Rats also need daily exercise time outside the cage. You can rat-proof a room by safely securing all wires and cords, blocking off any inappropriate hiding spaces, and setting up fun obstacle courses, tunnels, and toys for them to play with. You can also build rat-safe exercise pens using high cardboard or plastic walls. Remember, rats are small creatures, so if your new rat is skittish at first, that's just their natural instinct.
