How this pet arrived: This pet was brought in by a Good Samaritan on September 24, 2021.
At SDHS: Riley has received excellent care and is now ready for their new home!
Why this pet is the one for you: Meet Riley! A beautiful tortoise that is looking for their new paradise. Tortoises can do extremely well locally, given proper care. They start off small and cute but grow to weights of over 75 pounds with exceptionally large individuals weighing more than 100 pounds. They are strict vegetarians. In the wild, they feed on dry, fibrous grasses and hays, as well as occasional fruits and blossoms. Their diet in captivity should be similar. Dark, leafy greens such as collards, mustard, romaine, and red leaf lettuce are all good choices. They are not apartment pets - they should spend most of their time outside in a large area with access to fresh water and plenty of shade. They are strong, so a stable fence or wall is a good way to keep them enclosed rather than an ex-pen or a flimsy chain-link fence. They would also need large heated housing outside when the weather gets cold or humid/wet. We recommend doing lots of research before bringing home a lifelong commitment (they can live as long as we do, even longer!)
